Go to menu top I never heard anything better than a Fender if we’re talking about the big manufacturers. Later on, in the Guitar section, I’ll also talk about Standel and EchoSonic , but they’re produced in such small numbers that it’s fair to say they’ll only have historic interest to the most of us So As long as you get a tube Fender you’ll probably be on the right track, because they all sound pretty good. It doesn’t have to be vintage at all, but they do look pretty cool. Actually I started out playing a vintage Vox AC 30 and it wasn’t bad at all. The sound was very ‘tube’ and that’s what you’re looking for, but Fender is still the better choice for Rockabilly. Fender Bassman ’59 reissue Many Rockabilly guitarists play a ’59 Fender Bassman or similar – vintage or reissue. It sounds perfect for rockabilly. The distortion which is where you get the right sound from changes dramatically with change of volume. That’s very impractically when you play live, where you have to adjust the volume after the size and acoustics of the place where you playing.

Everyone, young and old, was curious of who the originator of this incredibly unique sounding music could be. The original scheduled release of the single was for January 13th, , but was moved up because of public demand.
That demand originated, in part, from the results of one 15 year old girl in Washington D. An uninterrupted tape recording of the song was quickly sent to a disc jockey in Chicago who also played it on the air and received great response from their listeners.

Vintage Drum Guide Search our web sites! I get emails all of the time with a basic drum description and a serial number from visitors in hopes I can unlock the history of their drum. I think in general serial numbers do play an important role in the commercial market especially electronics and other high end items. In the 60’s Insurance companies made it mandatory that serial numbers be put on items so they can be documented. Unfortunately drum companies never really prescribed to any code of documenting a drum based on that serial number.
In fact I once heard that they started using serial numbers not for their own use per say but so schools and institutions could keep track of instruments in inventory. I also get people asking what factory a drum might have shipped from or the exact month a drum was made or even the production numbers etc. The ever important serial number which some companies keep detailed records of unfortunately does not exist in the history of drums. We also have to state that much of the record keeping was archaic at best and in some cases history was destroyed in plant fires or just tossed in the garbage!.
With that said many drum companies never even used serial numbers early on. In most cases the best way to estimate the date of a drum is its physical characteristics.

With most other drum companies, serial numbers are considered very helpful tools, but not with Gretsch. The lack of understanding of Gretsch’s use of serial numbers leaves the vintage drum owner relatively few tools for estimating the age of their vintage Gretsch drum. Some of these theories are contradictory and few are definitive. Despite this, John Sheridan proposed a “rule of thumb” for round badge drums in which linked the number of digits in serial numbers to date ranges.
Although frustrated by the lack of reliable information, RIck saw a solvable problem. Rick did not want to merely recite the legend and lore but wanted to apply a fresh and unbiased view to the Gretsch dating issue. Gretsch Guitars Understanding Gretsch guitar serial numbers. Gretsch used several different serial number schemes through the years. Each of them can be used to accurately pinpoint the age of a guitar, if you have the correct information.

It is estimated that no more than a few dozen were made from the introduction of the model in through , when it was discontinued, though exact production totals for early Gretsch guitars are not available. List prices for White Penguins and White Falcons insured both would be extremely rare.
Original list price is not necessarily a determinant of current value on the vintage instrument market. The Penguin and Falcon evolved in much the same manner. The Falcon featured body and neck dimensions the same as the Country Club model, with the exception of a larger and differently shaped peghead, while the Penguin featured Duo Jet-type structural features with the exception of the peghead. Early Falcons and Penguins featured hump-top block inlays with engraving, and the vertical gold-sparkle-inlaid Gretsch peghead logo with wings to the side.
A metal armrest is typical of the Penguin, though some lack the feature. Early Penguins and Falcons have a Melita bridge, single-coil DeArmond pickups, one three-position toggle pickup selector, and a master volume knob on the upper bout, and two volume knobs and one tone knob on the lower bout. In , Gretsch introduced its FilterTron double-coil pickups, space-control bridge, and changed the wiring such that the Penguin and Falcon and other Gretsches from that time onward feature a three-position pickup selector and three-position tone switch on the upper bass bout, a master volume knob on the upper treble bout, and two volume knobs on the lower bout.
